Thiago Alves Vs. Diego Sanchez Confirmed For UFC 90

Chicago will be treated to one of the most exciting matches in recent history when it plays host to Thiago Alves vs. Diego Sanchez, set for UFC 90.

MMA Weekly has the scoop:

After first breaking the news that top welterweights Thiago Alves and Diego Sanchez would meet at UFC 89 in Birmingham, England, MMAWeekly.com has just learned that the fight will instead take place on the as of yet unannounced card for UFC 90 set to take place in Chicago, Ill.

MMAWeekly.com confirmed the change with sources close to the fight. UFC president Dana White, in speaking to the Chicago Sun Times on Monday, announced an Oct. 25 date in confirming UFC 90 for the Allstate Arena in Chicago. He did not confirm any bouts for the event.

UFC 90 follows one week after the UFC 89 show in England. UFC 89 is currently still rumored to be a free show on Spike TV, but again, there is no confirmation for that yet from the UFC.

Alves and Sanchez were set to be part of the co-main event for UFC 89, but the promotion decided to push up the light heavyweight bout between Thiago Silva and Lyoto Machida as the other headliner behind the main event featuring Michael Bisping vs. Chris Leben.

It is now believed that the Alves vs. Sanchez fight will be part of the main event set up for the card in Chicago for UFC 90, but no other fights have been rumored or announced as of yet.

Diego is fighting different now, he's in a better place mentally...you can tell by his promos that he's more humble...i think he capitalizes on Thiago's aggressivness...I am definately rooting for a fellow Chicano, GO DIEGO!!!

No prob, Ben.....this is going to be one helluva a throwdown. I see this going the distance, and Diego outworking Alves....Yes, I'm prob the biggest Diego fan on this site, so naturally I'm going to pick him, but putting my favoritism aside, and looking at this fight objectively, I think Sanchez has increased his game (mentally and physically) and overall, general strength, that he takes this match via decision. He HATES to lose, and he's already lost twice not too long ago. Alves is a tough ass MF'er, no question there, and the Diego Sanchez that we all knew before (u know, the crazy ass maniac, with great grappling skills, outstanding jits, and a full throttle pace ---- NONSTOP), would probably lose to Alves today. That said, something's happened to Diego lately. He's gotten even crazier, and the big difference is that he's gotten extremely more technical, and his strength has increased tremendously. Take a look at the Diego that won TUF 1, and a look at the Diego at the weigh in vs Luigi ---- he doesn't even look the same. Before you say it, I already know that "muscle" doesn't win a fight, but more focus on technique does. He had a choice after losing to Jon Fitch --- Should he drop down to 155lbs and take an easier route, b/c he's naturally a smaller 170lber than the top WW fighters? Or does he work on what (if you re-watch his match vs. Fitch, I think you'll agree that the main factor that caused him to lose the split decision was that he simply was not strong enough) factor caused him to lose his fight to Fitch? ---- HIS STRENGTH. What use does a top fighter have vs. another top fighter if they simply cannot fully utilize their skills, based on the fact that the opponent is simply overpowering each and every sub attempt and things of such. Now this does not apply for every fighter, I just feel that it specifically applied to Diego in that particular match (and most likely in many other matches, where both fighters were pretty equal in skill). He was doing pretty damn good for himself without focusing on becoming a more technical fighter and stronger fighter. Hell he was kickin the shit outta people based on his shear aggressiveness and talent in wrestling and jits. Considering all that, and now adding his new mindset and technical capabilities, and his (much needed) humbleness, I think we now are looking at a different competitor in Sanchez. Correct me if I'm wrong, Ben, but I think you mentioned this as a possible "fight of the year" candidate. I agree 100à This fight has all the ingredients to be a straight up old school rumble in the cage. I really like Alves. I think he's got a great style, he's talented as hell, fun to watch, and in any other instance (for the most part), I'd be going for him. Not on this fight though....absolutely not.....I like Alves, but I hope Sanchez kicks the livin S*it out of him! Can't wait for this one....

Great Points Defrage. You back up Sanchez with a very reasonable outline of why he should win. However, I think Alves will cut weight better, and bet stronger than Sanchez, as well as utilize his better stand up to make Sanchez go from plan A to plan C real fast. Once rattled, and feeling less strong, Sanchez will not have the answer for the problems that Alves poses. Like I stated before, it will be a fast paced fight, Fight of the Year candidate, and will end by the second round with Alves being the winner. Then again, I've been wrong before.....
